On the road again
We left home around 9 am today, heading to New York. Actually, we left at 8:20, but about 15 miles up the road, I noticed that I didn’t have my purse—it was still in the other car sitting there in the garage—so we turned around and went back for it. Now, at 17:09, we’re about half way between Lebanon and Rolla, Missouri, on Interstate 44.
So far, it’s been a rather boring day. I read for a while (The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd) and then dug out my laptop. I updated my Reading Blog, downloaded my e-mail, and then was left with the outstanding need to finish my presentations for next month’s conference. I have to upload them before tomorrow morning. Two of the four are finished and ready to go. The third is partially ready and the fourth is in shambles. But, I’m sure I’ll pull it together before tomorrow morning.
I’m really enjoying my high-tech computing gear. With the laptop computer, a cellular modem, and a 12-volt power supply, I’ve been able to stay online continuously from Oklahoma City to here. For an hour or so, I was logged into IRC and chatting with friends there. Add the cell phone and we put a whole new definition to "mobile empolyee".
Speaking of mobility, last Thursday afternoon, I went to the local Public Library instead of working from home. The library has free Wi-Fi access which is significantly faster than my cellular modem, so on days when I just can’t face the commute into Dallas but I need a better online connection, the library fits the bill. While I was there, the librarian asked if I’d talk with a reporter for a nearby newspaper. I did, and I expect to be quoted, but without reference to my employer.
Looks like we’re going to get through Saint Louis and then find a place to stay for the night. Steven doesn’t want to have to drive through the city first thing in the morning, anticipating rush hour traffic. Given the geography around here, I think we need to find a hotel on the Missouri side of the river and cross over into Illinois in the morning.
