Flaming Gorge & Ashley National Forest

Today we drove around in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in Southwestern Wyoming and Northern Utah. The Visitor’s Center was closed, but the Lodge was still open. We stopped at a number of overlooks and trail sites.

This site is named for the bright red cliffs which border the Green River. Although the area is a National Recreation Area, it is administered by the National Forest Service instead of the National Parks Service.

The Ashley National Forest contains a number of camping sites including one along this branch of the river.

When we pulled into this camping area, a sign stated that fishing was not allowed from August 1 through October 31. I was sitting by this stream, and a young man came stomping into the water flinging a spear at fish in the water. He missed—twice—but as he retrieved his spears, he noticed me sitting there. I couldn’t tell if he blushed, but he did quickly leave the water.

One thing we particularly enjoyed were the bright yellow leaves on some of the trees at lower elevations. We kept debating whether these were Aspens or Birch. Since they had extremely bright white trunks, we finally decided that they were Birches.

Update: After consulting some others, we have been told that these are Aspens.
